How to Render Your Wax The Right Way
Share
Still using strainers, pouring hot wax through filters a million times and still getting dirty wax?
Let us give you a quick, easy guide on how to render your wax without all the fuss and even no strainers!
You will need the following:
- A double Jacket Pot - a bigger pot with water and a smaller pot inside for your wax also works!
- Water (enough to fill your jacketed pot - approx 500ml or more depending on size)
- Stove
- Wax cappings with no honey in them (this would have been done prior)
- Something to stir the wax with (like a paint stirrer stick etc)
- Conatiners to pour wax into (yougurt, takeaway or ice cream container)
- Something to cover the containers once poured (like a lid)
Step 1
Put your Double jacket pot onto the stove and turn on high. And place your cappings inside the pot - generally fill half way.
(if you are using two pots make sure there is enough water in the pot to cover half of the pot inside. Do not let the wax and water touch.)
Step 2
Once the wax is boiling and bubbling, turn the stove off.
Step 3
Get something to stir the wax (preferrably something that you are okay with getting wax on) Stir the wax a few times.
This gives the dirt a chance to settle to the bottom which will make it easier to pour later.
Step 4
Let the wax rest for a short while. Once the stove has been turned off and stirred, the wax will need a chance to settle the dirt and impurities to the bottom so you can get a clean pour.
This may take 10 minutes to a couple hours depending on how big the pot is and how much wax was put in.
Once you see that the wax on the top is starting to solidify, it is then the perfect time to pour.
Step 5
Once the wax on the top has started to solidify, you will then pour your wax into your containers. When you start to see dirt and impurites you will then STOP POURING!
Then place something on top of the containers so no other dirt or bees can contaminate the wax while it is setting.
Step 6
If you have more wax to render, repeat the process
Step 7
Once finished, you will have a little bit left over with all of the impurities on the bottom or 'slum gum' as we call it. You can choose to either scrape or filter this to get it clean or most beekeepers will try to clean as much off as possible and then stick the wax in the freezer until it is time to do the next wax rendering.
After following these steps you should have spotless wax like this!
